It is our sad duty to record the death of Mrs. Caleb Mercer, who, with her aged husband lived on the county line in Jasper seven miles north of Mitchellville. On Friday she attempted to get into a shed in front of their horse so as to go and see a daughter who lives near A. B. Miles. ____ and she was thrown to the ground with such force as to break her right arm in two places between the elbow and shoulder ___ the bones through the flesh. Dr. H___ the arm and nothing ___ its healing that ___ devise or loving hearts suggest. (Paper was very hard to read.)
But her health had been frail for a long time and rheumatism had undermined her strength, so she could not endure much suffering. Gangrene soon set in. Monday, the 16th, she felt her end approaching, and gathered her four children around her, talking with and praying for them; after which they all kissed and bade her good bye. At 6:40 o’clock of Jan. 17th, when her spirit returned to its creator.
The funeral was from Mr. Mercer’s residence at 11 o’clock on Thursday morning, the 19th, and was conducted by Rev. D. Brubaker. All the family were present except one son, who lives in Ohio.
