Russell Wayne Peterson, 87, of Newton died on Sunday, July 10, 2022, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, July 15, 2022, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends after the service with a coffee time at the funeral home. Memorials in Russ’s name (checks made payable to Duane Peterson) may be left at the funeral home.

Russell, the son of Oliver R. and Cora B. (Jewell) Peterson, was born on March 8, 1935 in Grinnell. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1953 and continued to live in Grinnell until 1960. Russell was united in marriage with Carolyn A. Dow on September 3, 1960 in Newton, where they would make their home. Russell worked as a repairman for the Maytag Company for 32 years, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed carpentry, mowing and fishing. Russell also loved to sit on his front porch and watch people.

Russell is survived by two children, Ranee Schiller of Newton and Duane (Amy) Peterson of Newton; five grandchildren, Michael Peterson, Matthew Peterson, Ryan Peterson, Ben Peterson, and Alec Dowdy; his sister, Beverly (Wilber) Anderson of Grinnell; daughter-in-law, Michelle “Shelly” Peterson of Newton; sisters-in-law, Rosa Dow and Ula Dow, both of Newton; and his brother-in-law Robert Van Sickle of Laurel. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carolyn; his son, Curtis Peterson; his brother, Earl Tony Peterson; sisters-in-law, Judy Van Sickle and Arless Smith; and brothers-in-law, Stan Dow and Clarence Dow.
