Alta Ruth Hefner, 91, of Park Centre Health Center in Newton died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at the center.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center, officiating. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name, to Willowbrook Adult Day Care, RSVP or the Alzheimer's Association of Iowa.

The daughter of Steffen and Mable (Elmitt) Madsen, she was born July 22, 1914, in Thompson. She graduated from Pocahontas Senior High School.

On Jan. 19, 1968, she married James Austin Hefner in Pocahontas. She was a homemaker and worked as a sales clerk at her parents’ general store in Pocahontas. She also worked as a clerk at a women's apparel store and was bookkeeper for her husband's refrigeration business.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pocahontas. She enjoyed embroidery, singing and was a Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews including Sally Schrurk of LeMars and Helen Pueppke of Oakland, Calif.; and friend, Deb Sloan of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and four brothers, Ray Madsen, Earl Madsen, Leo Madsen and Robert Madsen.
