Newton Man Killed in 2-Car Crash Saturday
A National Guardsman from Newton, Jimmy A. Quick, 29, of 927 W, 2nd St. S., was one of two persons killed in a three-car collision north of Des Moines Saturday.
Also killed in the accident was Dr. Kuel S. Sun, an Ames ophthalmologist.
Mr. Quick and Dr. Sun were drivers of two of the cars involved in the accident, Dr. R. C. Wooters, Polk County medical examiner, said.
Iowa Highway troopers said that the crash occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday when Quick, who was driving a National Guard jeep home from drills at Camp Dodge, apparently lost control of the vehicle in the eastbound lane of Interstate-80 near the East 14th St. bridge in Des Moines.
Officers said that the Newton man’s vehicle hit the bridge railing, spun around and then collided head-on with the car of Dr. Sun, sending it into the path of a car driven by Ken Uitermarkt, 40, of Pella.
Three other persons in Dr. Sun’s car were injured.
Part of the Jeep, after striking the second car, was knocked over the bridge, Mr. Quick was thrown from the driver’s seat and the Jeep burst into flames, authorities.
According to Polk County Sheriff Dick Clemons the driver of the second vehicle was trapped in the car about 12 minutes, was given heart massage and taken to Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines.
Mr. Quick, a member of the 191st Calvary at Newton, was participating in a weekend training camp at Camp Dodge.
