A. Raymond Lane Dies Saturday; Services Tuesday
A. Raymond Lane, 85, a former resident of Newton, died Saturday evening at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.
The Rev. David Rex, pastor of the Newton Church of God, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Chariton Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Toland-Wallace Funeral home after 9 a.m. today.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Ada) Lovell of Mid-town Apartments, and Mrs. Dick (Dorothy) Couper of Newton; four grandchildren, James and Russell Avitt, both of Des Moines, Mrs. Dick (Betty) Smith of Seattle, Wash., and Richard E. Couper of Newton, 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jessie in 1964; a son, Harry Avitt; two brothers; and four sisters.
Mr. Lane was a member of the Berean Assembly of God Church in Des Moines, the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Newton and a 50-year member of the American Legion Post No. 60 in Des Moines.
Mr. Lane was employed by the Burlington Railroad following World War I. He moved to Newton in 1925 where he was employed by the Maytag Co.
The son of Henry and Sarah Coleman Lane, he was born June 30, 1891 at Lucas and was a graduate of Lucas High School.
He was married to Jessie E. Avitt Sept. 9, 1926 in Newton.
Mr. Lane lived in Newton from 1925 until moving to Yakima, Wash., in 1945. He moved to Des Moines in 1950 where he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Lovell, since the death of his wife.
