Iona S. Smith Dies Saturday; Rites Tuesday
Iona S. Smith, 74, of 905 E. 15th St. S., a resident of Newton for 45 years, died Saturday afternoon at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.
The Rev. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Palo Alto Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund will be accepted.
Survivors are three sisters, Lettie Smith of Newton, Mrs. Lewis (Violet) Schultz of Reasnor and Mrs. Wilbur (Florence) Van Wyngarden of Reasnor; four nephews; a niece; and 13 great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and infant twin brothers.
Miss Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Susanne Circle, United Methodist Women, Newton Woman’s Club, CW Club, and Church Women United.
Miss Smith, who had retired from the purchasing department at the Maytag Co., also had taught country school for several years.
The daughter of Arthur J. and Mary Marshall Smith, she was born Jan. 3, 1902 near Reasnor, was graduated from New Monroe Community High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls and the University of Commerce in Des Moines.
