Prairie City Man Killed in Accident
Prairie City – Howard Lester Van Wyngarden, 65, of Prairie City, was killed Saturday when struck by the limb of a tree he was burning on his farm southwest of Prairie City near Runnells.
“Mr. Van Wyngarden was burning a standing tree, when apparently the top fell and struck him on the head and shoulders,” a spokesman for the Marion County Sheriff’s office in Knoxville reported.
Marion County Sheriff’s officials investigated the accident which occurred in the northwest corner of Marion County near the Polk and Jasper County lines.
According to sheriff’s officials, Mr. Van Wyngarden, who built Clear View Manor and later Van’s Retirement Home, both at Prairie City, was working on the farm clearing brush, fixing fences and burning limbs and trees when the accident occurred.
Mr. Van Wyngarden was discovered about noon by his son-in-law, Don Rozenboom of Prairie City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church at Prairie City.
The Rev. Phil Coe, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City.
Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City is handling arrangements.
Memorial contributions to the Christian Church in Prairie City will be accepted.
Survivors are his wife, Cordella; a son, Donald of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a daughter, Mrs. Don (Mary Lou) Rozenboom of Prairie City; four grandchildren; his father, Ira Van Wyngarden; a brother, Ray of Minneapolis, Minn.; and two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Mildred) Laughlin and Mrs. Galyn (Erma Ruth) Wilson, both of Nevada.
Mr. Van Wyngarden was a member of the Christian Church at Prairie City.
The son of Ira and Maude Jarnagin Van Wyngarden, he was born Nov. 20, 1910 in Marion County and was a 1928 graduate of Prairie City community High School.
He was married to Cordella Wilson Feb. 4, 1933 at Des Moines.
