November 17, 1935 ~ March 15, 2022 (age 86)

JoAnn’s funeral service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, March 19th at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Conducted by Father Anthony Herold, VG of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton.

The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Friday, March 18th at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

Burial will be at the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials in JoAnn’s name (please make checks payable to either Douglas Shannon or to Mary Roper) may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: Shannon Family on the envelope.

JoAnn C. Woodrow Shannon, the daughter of Myron D. and Jennie M. Vardo Woodrow was born on November 17, 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a graduate of Newton High School in 1954. JoAnn had also attended 2 years of college.

On June 25, 1954, JoAnn was united in marriage with Marlan R. Shannon in Newton. They were blessed with three children, Douglas, Mary and Gregory. JoAnn was the office manager for the Jasper County Public Health Nursing Office. She had also been a substitute Para-Professional in the Newton and North Liberty school districts for 14 years. JoAnn had been a member of ABWA, where she had been voted Businesswoman of the Year. She had belonged to many quilting clubs. JoAnn had been a member of the Hottie Red Hatters in Coralville. JoAnn had been a member of ABWA, where she had been voted Businesswoman of the Year. She had belonged to many quilting clubs. JoAnn had also been a member of the Hottie Red Hatters in Coralville. She had many quilts for all her kids and grandkids. JoAnn loved to go camping at Cuttys in Grimes. She was an only child but she loved all of her extended families of the Guthries, Woodrows, Vardos and Shannons. JoAnn had also enjoyed sewing and knitting. She was a loving and caring wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and friend.

JoAnn died on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at Accura Healthcare of Newton East in Newton surrounded by the love of her family. She was 86. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marlan R. Shannon in 2002 and granddaughter, Nicole Shannon in 1984.

Those left to cherish JoAnn’s memory are her children, Douglas R. Shannon of Kansas City, Missouri, Mary (Larry) Roper of Altoona and Greg (Linda) Shannon of Loudon, Tennessee; Abbey (Andrew) Davis of Manchester, New Hampshire, Jordan Shannon of Kansas City, Missouri, Molly (Tyler) Sullivant of Kansas City, Missouri, Maggie (Dakota) Blankenship of Kansas City, Missouri, Macey Shannon (fiancé, Corry Hawkins) of Severance, Colorado, Danielle (Earl) Putz of Waterloo, Kaitlin Gordon of Ames and Ryan Shannon if Grand Rapids, Michigan; here seven great-grandchildren, with a great-grandson due in May; and JoAnn’s very special friend, Glynn Williams.
