Two Newton Youths Killed As Car Goes Out of Control
Two Newton teen-age cousins were killed Thursday night when the car in which they were riding went out of control throwing them from the vehicle and pinning them under the wreckage.
Dead when authorities arrive was Steven Jack Burk, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert V. Burk of 614 W. 6th St. S.
Donna Mae Morgan, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wylie B. Morgan of 523 S. 2nd Ave. W., died of injuries after being rushed to Skiff Hospital by the Fire Department ambulance.
Driver of the car, John Edward Mickle, 17, of 535 W. 10th St. N., son of Mrs. Donald Halsey and Ed Mickle of Newton, was taken to Skiff, suffering from shock and minor injuries.
According to investigating officer, Deputy Sheriff Jim Verwers, Mickle was westbound on a gravel road southeast of the Newton Airport. As he approached a “T” intersection and applied the brakes, they locked causing the vehicle to skid sideways into a ditch.
Mickle, who was driving with a temporary driving permit, was charged with failure to have control of vehicle.
Verwers was assisted by Newton Police, who were first at the scene shortly before midnight and the Iowa Highway Patrol.
The 1960 model car, belonging to Donald Halsey, was totally demolished.
Double services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in First Methodist Church.
Dr. Edwin Frohardt, minister of the church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.
The caskets will not be opened at the church.
