W. P. Smith Dies From Apoplexy
Walnut Ridge (Special to The Daily News) – W. Perry Smith, 88, well-known Des Moines township farmer, died of a stroke of apoplexy at his home eight miles southwest of Prairie City Sunday morning at 9:30 o’clock.
Death came unexpectedly as Smith stood in his home looking out a window at his farm land.
In apparent good health, he had just finished helping with the morning chores and had returned to the house when he was stricken. He never regained consciousness after collapsing. Ralph Toland, county coroner, who was called to the home, said there would be no inquest.
Rites Tuesday
Mr. Smith, who would have celebrated a birthday in a few weeks, submitted to an operation about three years ago, recovered and since then had been active for a man of his age. Friday and Saturday he was in Prairie City.
Funeral services will be held at the Vandalia Community church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
Relatives
Mr. Smith was a resident of Jasper county for about 65 years. Immediate relatives surviving are his wife, three sons, Virgil and Orr, who live on the home farm, and Glenn Smith, who lives on a nearby farm; two daughters, Veva, who lives on the home farm, and Mrs. W. S. Charls of near Prairie City, and six grandchildren.
Two sons, Milo and Orville, preceded their father in death several years ago.
