Last Rites for Mrs. Holy March 17th
Mary Theresa, daughter of Celestine and Sarah Gulling, was born near South Bend, Ind., March 3, 1862, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. H. Trader of near Vandalia, Iowa, March 13, 1943, at the age of 81 years and 10 days.
When but a child, eight years of age, she came with her parents to Iowa, where they settled on a farm near Vandalia. She lived there until her marriage to a friend and neighbor, John Holy, on March 4, 1884. They established their home on an adjoining farm, where they resided until the death of her husband in 1924, thus making almost sixty years of her life spent in that community.
To this union were born four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom are living; Mrs. A. H. Trader of Prairie City, Iowa, Thomas C. of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. F. T. English of Runnells, Iowa and Russell A. of Chicago, Ill.; also two granddaughters, Mrs. Vesta Buckingham and Mary Alice Holy.
Following the death of her husband, she made her home with a daughter, Mrs. English, then moved to Runnells where she was later united in marriage to Frank Wallace in the year 1929. They continued their residence there until the past three years, when she came to live with her daughters.
In infancy the deceased was baptized in the Catholic faith but later she affiliated with the Christian church of Runnells where she attended services as long as her health permitted.
Mrs. Holy has enjoyed fair health for one of her years until the past several months; her strength gradually began to fail. A few days prior to her passing she suffered a stroke which resulted in her death on the above mentioned date.
She is not gone only gone before. Heaven is nearer, life sweeter, home dearer; because of the pure, sweet life Mother has lived.
In addition to the four children and two granddaughters previously mentioned, she leaves four brothers and one sister, one brother and five sisters having gone on before.
Those surviving are E. S. Gulling of Rembrandt, Peter Gulling of Prairie City, C. C. Gulling and J G. Gulling, both of Runnells, and Mrs. Ora Conard of New Virginia, and a number of nephews and nieces and many friends.
Funeral services were held from the Vandalia church Wednesday afternoon, March 17, at two o’clock with Rev. C. E. McDonald of Des Moines in charge, with Bro. Earl Warren of Ivy, assisting.
Music was furnished by Paul Keeney and Earl Warren with Mrs. Keeney as accompanist. Hymns were “In the Garden,” “Under His Wings” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Pallbearers were Claude Webb, C. H. Anderson, J. C. Cooper, J. C. Miller, Ford Mott and A. H. Enyart. Interment was in the Vandalia cemetery.
