The Obituary of Mrs. J. G. Gulling
Myrtle Mae, daughter of Curtis and Eliza Perryman, was born near Percy, Iowa, Nov. 19, 1878, and departed this life April 18, 1943, at the age of 64 years, 4 months and 29 days.
She grew to womanhood on the farm in Marion county at which place, on Feb. 2, 1902, she was united in marriage to James G. Gulling. To this union three children were born: Pearl Miller, Ralph and Blake Gulling, all of whom survive.
Following their marriage, they lived near Vandalia until twenty-five years ago when the family moved to the home in Polk county where they have since resided.
At an early age the deceased accepted Jesus as her personal savior, uniting with the Pleasant Hill Methodist church, and through all the years her faith never wavered; and how fitting that a few days prior to the resurrection observance she answered the call of “Come all ye that labor and I will give thee rest.”
Mrs. Gulling was a patient and uncomplaining sufferer in the many months of declining health and all was done that loving hands and medical skill could do, and for a time the efforts appeared fruitful as strength seemed to return to the frail body; but on Sunday morning a congested heart condition developed and she suddenly passed on at noon of the same day.
There need be no eulogy of her who has spent the years of her life in practically the same community as she was loved by those who knew her, for the devotion to her home and family, loyalty to friends and the clean, honest Christian life she lived, which are characteristics worthy of the highest ambitions to which no word we might write would add or detract.
She will be missed by friends and her death will leave a vacant place in their hearts as well as loved ones. Her greatest pleasure and delight was in having the children and grandchildren in the home and their comfort and welfare was her greatest concern. To them she has but gone before, as her good influence and deeds of kindness will be the beacon of the guiding light to them in the future.
Surviving are the husband, children, six grandchildren, Wayne Miller, Bobby, Laverne, Lyle, Linda and Dean Gulling; one brother, John Perryman, three sisters, Mrs. Prudy Powell, Mrs. Laura Quick and Mrs. Nellie Moomaw; also many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held from the Vandalia church on Tuesday, April 20, at two o’clock with Rev. C. M. McDonald of Des Moines in charge. Music was furnished by Chas. McKinney and Mrs. Walter Skinner with Mrs. Glen Weaver as accompanist. Hymns: “Does Jesus Care,” “In That City,” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus.”
Pallbearers were Melvin Moomaw, Russell Quick, Ross Smith, Ross Gulling, Harlan Gulling and Ben Gulling. Lilly’s service was in charge. Interment was in the Vandalia cemetery.
