Jennie E. Shartle was born near Lima, Indiana, April 5, 1840, and died at Des Moines June 3, 1934, aged ninety-four years, one month and twenty-eight days.
Her home for twenty-five or thirty years has been at Fort Des Moines. At an early age she united with the Church of Christ, and her faith in her Savior grew stronger as the years went by.
Some of the early years of her life were spent in the pineries of northern Michigan, and well she knew the hardships of pioneer life. Later she moved to Des Moines where she was married to Levi Surber in December 1879. Mr. Surber preceded her in death April 11, 1913.
She was always ready to help those in trouble or distress, and was a good neighbor and friend to all.
She leaves two step-daughters, Mrs. Esther Wallace of Bedford, Iowa, and Mrs. Kathryn Shearer of Newton, Iowa, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves a host of tried and true friends and neighbors at Fort Des Moines.
Graveside services were conducted by Rev. Findley of the Prairie City Methodist church on Tuesday morning at ten o’clock. Burial was made in the Vandalia cemetery.
