Obituary of J. I. Cavett of Vandalia, Ia.
John Irvin, son of Thomas and Jane Cavett, was born in Harrison county, Pennsylvania, on May 13, 1850, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gladyce Wallace of Vandalia, Iowa, on Dec. 19, 1942, at the age of ninety-two years, seven months and six days.
In early manhood he was united in marriage to Jennie Wallace, then settling at Vandalia, Iowa where they established their home. To this union were born three children, two sons, Roy and James, who both preceded him a number of years ago and a daughter Katie, who survives.
On Dec. 24, 1901, he was again united in marriage to Lucy Belle White, who passed away Oct. 2, 1938. To this union was born one daughter, Gladyce, in whose home he has been the recipient of the tenderest care in his declining years.
He was engaged in the mercantile business practically all of his life. In fifty of the seventy-five years spent as storekeeper at Vandalia, he was a dominant figure of the community. No matter what the occasion might be – Memorial day, Fourth of July, Christmas, funerals, church, school or politics - Mr. Cavett was the center of it. He made genereous contributions to all worthy causes, and his help and sympatny to the poor and needy was his outstanding characteristic.
Mr. Cavett exceeded by almost twenty-three years his allotted three score and ten. Though apparently frail, he enjoyed fairly good health for one of his years until the past some months. He has been afflicted with kidney trouble, and on Dec. 17 suffered a paralytic stroke which resulted in his death on the above mentioned date.
The deceased was a kind and loving father and a true friend and he will be greatly missed in the home and in the community in which he has taken an active part for many years. He was the last of a family of five brothers and two sisters.
He leaves to mourn his departure two daughters, Mrs. Gladyce Wallace of Vandalia, Iowa and Mrs. Katie Utterback of Lombard, Ill.; three grandchildren, Mrs. Dorothy Fist of Monticello, Minn., Miss Eileen Utterback of Lombard, Ill., and Max Wallace of Vandalia, Iowa; a number of nieces and nephews, and a large circle of friends.
