On Oct. 22, 1880, a girl was born whom they named Rhoda to Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Underwood in Jasper county east of Vandalia, and this girl has spent her entire life near the community of her birth.
She united in marriage to Chas. Anderson of the same community, and to this union nine children were born, two dying in infancy, and Pauline in February, 1933, the only grown one to leave. The date of her marriage was March 26, 1901, and during these thirty-five years she has been a good companion, a dutiful wife and a loving mother. She has been an energetic woman, a hard worker, and one who loved company, especially her children and grandchildren even when at the worst by reason of illness. She always loved the home gatherings.
Two years she wrestled with the disease that caused her death, only to give up after a tremendous fight near 1:00 p.m. Sept. 4, 1936, at the age of fifty-five years, ten months and twelve days.
She leaves the husband mentioned, Virgil, the oldest yet at home, Opal Ware, Gladys near Runnells, Doyle near Rising Sun, Merle north of Ivy and Maude, the youngest, yet at home; four grandchildren, Herman and Chas. Irons, Leora Sharer and Marie Ware.
She has been in very poor health for two years, and for some time prior to the death of her mother had the care of her, and then her aged father made his home with her for some years. Some three weeks ago her sister died but she did not know of it, her condition being too grave to tell her.
Mrs. Rhoda Anderson, dear wife and mother, We now just wonder if every another Could suffer so much in this present life, And be such a mother, companion and wife.
We shall long remember in the coming years Your last years with us; and eyes fill with tears, As we meditate how you suffered so, Before that sad hour you were called to go.
We’ll miss you so much in our lonely home – So dedicate you this brief farewell poem.
It seems ‘most a dream, yet one all so true: Our loving companion has taken adieu.
And we’ll miss you much from day unto day, For all are so sorry you must pass away.
Your counsel we deemed most lovingly dear, The neighbors, the friends, will all miss you here –But we’ll do our best to each carry on And keep things going, since now you have gone.
We truly regret that you had to die, But will all now say farewell, and goodbye.
Services were at Vandalia, 2:30 p.m. Sept. 7, 1936, Earl Warren of Ivy officiating.
One of the largest crowds assembled to pay their last respects to those left behind.
Burial was at Vandalia.
