David Amos McKeever was born on the McKeever farm near Colfax, Ia., October 2nd, 1853 and died at his home in Mingo March 26, 1930, age 76 years, 5 months and 24 days.
He was united by the bond of holy Matrimony to Ida Gleason at Newton, Iowa, July 3rd, 1879. To this union were born four children.
Mingo can well claim Mr. McKeever as her citizen; for he has resided here for the past 38 years and during this long period he has been all that constitutes good citizenship. He was law abiding, benevolent, always interested in any good project for the good of the community, and was happiest when he could help someone along life’s pathway. Early in life he united with the Church of Christ, but later changed his membership to the Mingo M.E. church. He was a staunch believer in Christianity and told many before he died that he was well prepared to meet his Heavenly Father.
His life’s companion preceded him in death just five years ago this month but now they are joined never again to part. One brother also preceded him in death.
Left to mourn his loss are his three sons, Cyrus, Lee and Wallie of Mingo, and one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Pond of Waterloo; one sister, Mrs. B. W. Beard and one brother, Wm. McKeever of Colfax; four half-brothers, Al Harmon of Adel; Doc Harmon of Valeria; M. J. Harmon of Newton and Lee Harmon of Arnold’s Park; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a multitude of loving friends.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. H. D. Simmons Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at the Mingo M.E. church. The men’s quartette, Floyd Hulse, Ethelbert Heberer, Bert Sandy and J. S. Brown sang “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,” “In the Garden,” and “That Beautiful Land,” with Miss Florence Frey accompanying them on the piano.
The pall bearers were: L. S., W. C. and W. M. McKeever, Munson Pond, Jessie Beard and John Stock. The body was laid to rest beside his wife in the McKeever cemetery.
The out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were Miss Lucille McKeever, Mr. and Mrs. Henry McKeever, Mrs. Horace Dodd, Mrs. Earl Gearhart, Mr. and Mrs. John Stock, Mrs. Gearhart, Mr. and Mrs. John Stock, Mrs. Ella Eshelman, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rhodes of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. David Lamb, Mrs. Arthur Dales, Mrs. Mary Sheffer of Valley Junction; Mrs. Frank Harmon, Mrs. M. J. Harmon of Newton; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hamilton, Mr. and Mrs. Ude Bucklin and Mr. and Mrs. Emory Perrin of Baxter; Munson Pond of Waterloo and Mrs. Irvin Halterman of Runnells.
