Swan, June 19 – Edith Mary Hawkins, daughter of Samuel and Annie Hawkins, was born in London, England, Aug. 30, 1863, and died at her home in Swan, June 15, 1933, at the age of 69 years, 9 months and 15 days. She came with her parents to the united States in 1870, settling at Mitchellville, Iowa, later moving to near Vandalia then to Carroll county, where she was married to A. C. Fleming on Sept. 3, 1881. To this union seven children were born; Albert and Mary died in infancy, Leslie Paul died June 20, 1926.
Those who survive her are her husband and four children – Mrs. J. M. Kise, of Swan; Mrs. W. G. Kramer, of Emporia, Kansas; Walter R. Fleming, of Carlisle, and Bessie, at home. She also leaves five granddaughters and one grandson.
She was one of ten children, of whom only one brother, Fred Hawkins, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and one sister, Mrs. Annie Van Der Water, of Orient, Iowa, remain.
Mrs. Fleming united with the Christian church at Swan thirty-three years ago. She has always lived a good Christian life, especially administering to the sick or ones in distress.
She has been a loving wife and mother, taking great interest in her home and her grandchildren. It has often been said that she was a friend to everyone. She will be greatly missed by her family as well as her host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Swan, Sunday, June 18, conducted by Rev. O. E. Cooley, of Pleasantville; interment at Vandalia cemetery.
