Funeral services for Gerrit John Jochems, 87, of Careage of Newton, were held Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 30, at the Sully Christian Reformed Church.
The Rev. Fred Van Houten, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in the Sully Cemetery.
Memorials to Careage of Newton will be accepted.
He died Sunday at Careage of Newton.
Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Betty of Pella and Harry and Joyce of Newton; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Duane Westbrook of Newton; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister living in The Netherlands.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Jennie, Sept. 24, 1943, second wife, Emma, May 5, 1981, two brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Jochems, a longtime farmer, was a member of the Sully Christian Reformed Church.
The son of Peter and Bertha Kanstas Jochems, he was born Aug. 4, 1904 in Barneveld, The Netherlands, and was educated in schools in The Netherlands.
At the age of 19 he and two friends came to Eddyville where he worked on a farm. He later moved to Kellogg where he was employed by several farmers. He started farming for himself in 1930.
He was married to Emma Van Wyk Jan. 23, 1945 and to Jennie Bruxvoort Jan. 30. 1930.
