Funeral services for Lawrence Raymond Smith, 67, of 723 W. 3rd St. S., a lifelong resident of Jasper County, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.
The Rev. Ray Barnett, pastor of the First Christian Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He died of a heart attack Sunday evening at his home.
Survivors are his wife, Wilma; three sons, Ron of Baxter, Fred of Mitchellville and Tim of Kellogg; a daughter, Debby (Mrs. Mark) Wilson of Ames; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Wayne and Chris, both of Newton and Hugh “Frosty” Smith of Manchester, Tenn.; and three sisters, Ilis Hodgson of Newton, Helen (Mrs. Clarence) Faidley of Prairie City and Judy (Mrs. Dale) Berg of Colfax.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Dennis, William and James.
Mr. Smith was a member of the First Christian Church, Elks Lodge 1260, Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1655 and the American Legion Post 111.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he farmed in Jasper County before becoming employed in the wringer assembly department at the Maytag Co., retiring May 31, 1983.
The son of Charles and Agnes Gibson Smith he was born Dec. 14, 1923 in Newton Township in Jasper County and attended rural Jasper County schools.
He was married to Wilma J. Byerley April 2, 1950 in Missouri.
