October 30, 1947 - July 31, 2021

Richard E. "Rick" Vander Werf, age 73 of Monroe, passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at the Comfort House in Pella. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe. Burial with full military rites will be held following at Silent City Cemetery. Visitation for Rick will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Coburn Funeral Home. Memorials may be left for RSVP (RideShare) in Newton or the Monroe American Legion. The son of Clarence "Bud" and Alice (Fenoglio) Vander Werf, Rick was born on October 30, 1947 in Knoxville, Iowa. He graduated from Monroe High School. Rick proudly served in the United States Army. On August 31, 1978 he was united in marriage to Kay Thompson at the Methodist Church in Monroe. Rick worked at Maytag in Newton for 35 years. He was a member of the Monroe American Legion Post #363. He loved hunting, fishing, and golf.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Kay; two children, Matthew Alan (Erin) Vander Werf and Morgan Beth (Tony) DeRaad; seven grandchildren, Baylee and Natalie Smith, Kaia and Jordan Vander Werf and Gavin, Brevin, and Avery DeRaad; a sister, Jerrilyn Allison and a nephew, Justin Vander Werf. Preceding Rick in death were his parents.
