Clear Creek – Mary Etta Miller was born in Clear Creek township, Jasper county, on January 22, 1859. She died at her home west of Baxter, November 4th at the age of nearly 66 years. She had been ill several months with ___ and an infection in her foot. Suffering was intense. In 1878, she was united in marriage to William Sumpter who died in October 1922. To this union five children were born son Scott, who died in May 1907, Chas., Milo. Mrs. Cynthia Berry and Perry who live near here and cared for her in her last days. She leaves her brother Robert Miller, and 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Mildred Ludlow lived with her grandparents, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Sumpter both died when she was a small child. The funeral was held at the home with Rev. George Ingle, of Baxter in charge. A quartette, Mesdames Curray and Goodman, Guy Hardenberg and son sang, “Shall We Gather at the River,” “Beautiful Isle” and “Abide With Me.” The many flowers were tributes of love from her host of friends and relatives. Interment was made at Kurtz cemetery.
Mrs. Lidy Tramel and daughter, Mrs. Eliza Wagoner, Mr. and Mrs. Chancey Kurtz, of Colfax, Mr. and Mrs. Ham Sumpter of Waukee, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Sumpter, of Mitchellville were relatives from a distance.
Mrs. Sumpter was a granddaughter of the late Joseph Kurtz, first settler in Clear Creek township. He owned 1000 acres of land. Mrs. Sumpter and brothers still own part of the old homestead, getting it from their mother who was Rebecca Kurtz.

Mary Etta Miller was born in Clear Creek township, Jan. 22, 1859, and died at her home west of Baxter, Tuesday, Nov. 4th, 1924, after several months’ illness.
She was united in marriage in 1878 to Wm. H. Sumpter who passed on in Oct. 1922. To this union five children were born, Scott, who died in May 1907; Chas., Milo, Cynthia Berry and Perry who were with her in her last days and did all they could for her. She leaves one brother, Robert Miller, 13 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many other relatives to mourn the loss of a good woman.
Mildred Ludlow lived with her grandparents, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Sumpter dying when she was a babe. Funeral services were held at the home on Thursday at 2 p.m. Rev. Geo. Ingle of Baxter officiating. A quartet sang three hymns. Interment was in Kintz cemetery.
Mrs. Lily Tramel and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Chance Kintz, Mrs. Eliza Wagoner of Colfax, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Sumpter of Mitchellville, Mr. and Mrs. Ham Sumpter of Waukee, attended the funeral.
