After an illness extending over several weeks Mrs. S. W. Boyd passed away last Wednesday at her home in this city a victim of heart disease, in her 76th year, leaving a family of eleven of the twelve children born to her - all of whom were in attendance at her funeral, which was from the M. E. church at 2 p.m. yesterday conducted by the pastor. Her maiden name was Zilpha Bates. She was born in Virginia June 27, 1829. She was united by marriage to S.W. Boyd in Muskingum county, Ohio, in 1849, and 15 years later they came to Iowa and located on the farm in Poweshiek township, in this county, which was their home up to the time they moved to Colfax -- four years ago. Mr. Boyd died about two years ago, and his wife's interment yesterday was beside him in the McKeever cemetery north of Colfax. In their sadness over her loss her loving children have the consciousness that she has gone to her well-earned reward. The family requests us to return their sincere thanks to neighbors and friends for sympathy and substantial acts of kindness during their season of bereavement.

Zilpha Bates was born in Lowden county, Virginia, June 27th, 1829, and died at her home in Colfax, Iowa, April 20th, 1905, and at the time of her death she was 75 years, 9 months and 23 days old.
When a small child she moved with her parents from her native state to Belmont county, Ohio, and some years later to Muskingum county, Ohio, where she was united in the bonds of holy matrimony to Samuel W. Boyd in 1849, and where the first fifteen years of her married life were spent. In 1864 the family removed to Jasper county, Iowa, where she has lived ever since. She was the mother of twelve children, eleven of whom rise up and call her blessed, one child and her husband having preceded her to the spirit world. When a girl nineteen years of age she was converted and joined the Methodist church. She hath wrought well and rests in peace. The funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Colfax Sunday afternoon and were in charge of the pastor Rev. E. H. Fleisher who had chosen for his text from the gospel of St. Mark 14:8. “She hath done what she could.” The funeral was largely attended by her old neighbors and friends. The interment was in the McKeever cemetery by the side of her husband. Another one of Jasper county’s old citizens has gone from among us.
