Died – On Monday, Dec. 12, 1887, at the residence of his son Taylor, in Poweshiek township, Richard Barker, aged 85 years, 3 months and 19 days.
The funeral was held in the Greencastle church on Wednesday, Rev. M. See preaching the sermon, and the remains were interred at the McKeever burying ground. A large number of friends attended the obsequies and paid their last tribute of respect to the good old man whom everyone in this part of the county has long known and honored. Richard Barker was one of the pioneers of Jasper county. He came here when houses were few and neighbors were scarce. He was a man of gentle disposition and sterling honesty. A loving husband and kind father, none remember him but with feelings of esteem, and regret that the good man is gone. His fatal illness lasted some five weeks, and when the end came he was ready to go. He leaves an aged wife and six children to mourn his loss.
Rev. A. E. Griffith will hold memorial services for Mr. Barker on Christmas day at 11 o’clock.
