Was an Old Resident of the County – Mother of a Large Family of Children
Mrs. Sarah Ann Alexander, widow of the late Richard Alexander, died very suddenly Saturday evening of apoplexy, following a stroke of paralysis suffered a few days prior. She leaves to mourn her loss nine children, twenty-eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Sarah Ann Webb was born at Chambersburg, Pa. Nov. 19, 1838, the daughter of James and Margaret (Katchner) Webb, being one of a family of five children all of whom are decease except one brother, George Webb of Marshalltown.
She was united in marriage to Daniel Reese in Yankee Settlement, Delaware county, Iowa, on June 17, 1857, and removed to Jasper county, settling within three miles of her late home. Newton was then the nearest town but most of the trading was done at Fort Des Moines, driving overland and taking two days to make the trip. Four children were born to this union; Chas. J. Reese and Emma Seeley of Woodbine, Iowa; W. M. and G. B. Reese of Davenport. Daniel Reese enlisted in the civil war and later died from disease contracted while in active services, being buried at sea off the coast of Fort Monroe on May 11, 1865, never reaching home again and leaving his wife a widow with four small children.
On April 9, 1866, she was united in marriage to Richard Alexander and to them were born eight children, three dying in infancy and five surviving their mother, viz: Mrs. Susie Buckley, Mrs. Tina Barker, J. R. Alexander, Mrs. Anna Whitehead and Mrs. Isabell McKeever. At a very early age she was united with the church and contributed largely to the building of the Plummer Grove Chapel. For years she was class leader and superintendent of the Sunday school; until ten years ago when she lost her eyesight and was unable to take an active part, since then being a member of the Methodist church of Colfax.
