Richard Alexander was born August 18, 1824, at Conotton, Harrison county, Ohio, and died July 5, 1904, at 10:25 p.m., aged 79 years, 10 months and 16 days. He had been suffering for about four months with dropsy and heart trouble and knew that the end was near; seemingly glad to be relieved from the awful suffering of his disease.
Deceased was the son of Isaac and Nancy (Hurless) Alexander, natives of Ohio. He immigrated to Iowa in 1854, settling in Jasper county, where he has since resided. On April 1866, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Sarah A. Reese, and to them were born eight children, three dying in infancy and five surviving – Mrs. J. H. Buckley, Mrs. Taylor Barker, J. R. Alexander, Mrs. D. E. Whitehead and Miss Isabelle Alexander, who were all in attendance at his bedside during his last illness.
Mr. Alexander was a man of stern principle and high moral character, often forgetting his own interests in the desire to befriend some other less favored than himself.
The funeral services were at the home Thursday afternoon at two o’clock conducted by Rev. E. S. Brown, of Newton, who spoke very ably from the text found in the 9th chapter of Hebrews: “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment; so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” Interment occurred at the McKeever cemetery.
Those present from a distance were a brother of the deceased, Mr. G. W. Alexander, of Wren, Ohio, three stepchildren, Mr. W. M. and G. B. Rees, of Davenport, and Mrs. E. B. Seely and daughter, Ida, of Moorehead, Iowa, and a brother-in-law Mr. G. M. Webb and wife, of Baxter.
