Rev. J. M. Plumb died last Thursday at his home, 804 West Main street, Marshalltown, after an illness of several months with cancer of the kidney.
He was a preacher of the Methodist Protestant church and was recently appointed state evangelist, but owing to fail health had not been able to fill the duties of this office. Two months previous to his death Rev. Plumb went to Rochester, Minnesota, for an operation, but examination proved the trouble to be malignant and no operation was attempted.
Mr. Plumb had been a preacher for nineteen years. He united with the church in 1889, and at once began preaching. He was ordained in 1891, and his first charge was Mapleton, where he remained four years. He served at Rhodes two years, thence went to St. Anthony for two years, and then back to Rhodes – his last charge, which he relinquished on account of failing health. During his career in the ministry, Mr. Plumb founded several churches, and built parsonages at Rhodes, St. Anthony and Roughwood.
He was born in the year 1853 near Murphy, Jasper County, Iowa, and was the eldest son of J. W. and Elizabeth Plumb. His mother now 76 years old, is still living.
In 1872 Mr. Plumb took as his wife Miss Sara E. Reagan, of Collins, who survives him. To this union were born five children, three of whom survive: Mrs. Sarah E. Mead, of Ferguson; and Charles A. and John D. Plumb, both of Marshalltown. One child died in infancy and another at the age of seven.
Outside of his immediate family and his aged other, who lives at Baxter, Mr. Plumb is survived by six brothers and two sisters. They are J. M. Plumb, of Ardmore, S.D.; S. M. Plumb, of Oklahoma; W. C. Plumb, of Baxter; E. F. Plumb, of Ardmore, S.D.; Mrs. Laura A. Shepley, of Eldora Springs, Mo.; George Plumb, and Miss Hattie E. Hoy, of Baxter, and C. W. Plumb, of Northwood, Iowa. The funeral was from Union Chapel, near Ira, at 1:30 p.m., last Sunday, and the interment was in Union Chapel cemetery.
