Mrs. Nellie Crawford Planalp was born in Jasper County, Iowa, June 27, 1863, the fifth child of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Crawford. With the exception of one year which was spent at Maxell, Ia., prior to her marriage, she remained on the farm where she was born until her marriage on Sept. 20, 1893 to Peter A. Planalp. While in Maxwell she joined the Presbyterian church and was later transferred by letter to the Methodist Episcopal church at Ira, Iowa. Her transfer occurred in the fall of 1897.
Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Planalp moved to Alta, Ia. where they made their home for a period of 16 months. It was at Alta that an only child, Clarence Crawford, was born into the home to be its joy and comfort.
In Jan. 1895, the family moved from Alta to Mingo, Iowa, where Mr. Planalp preceded his companion in death on April 6, 1897, thus terminating their brief but happy companionship of 3 years and 7 months. Mrs. Planalp answered the summons to a happy reunion with her husband in the home where parting never comes on Oct. 20, 1935. She had attained the ripe age of 72 years, 3 months, and 23 days. She bore with patience her illness of 47 days until the brave spirit left her frail body and a most devoted and unselfish mother and grandmother had gone to her reward to dwell with the loved one gone before.
Those who survive to mourn her loss are her devoted son and his companion, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence C. Planalp of Baxter, Iowa, one grandson Merle Gene Planalp and several nieces and nephews besides a host of friends. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Hannah Tramel, who died March 17, 1918, Mrs. Jane Baker, March 20, 1896, Mrs. J. A. Campbell, February 14, 1923 and Henry W. Crawford, Feb. 17, 1933 and John H. Crawford Sept. 21, 1917.
For over 60 years Mrs. Planalp has lived in this community. Always kind and thoughtful of others, she has left a beautiful memory. She was an active and devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church until health began to fail her in 1924. A true Christian whose faith was truly proven by her works.
“Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, yes, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them.”
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. I. Blevins at the Union Chapel.
A mixed quartette consisting of Eldon Geisler, Mrs. A. W. Frey, Mrs. Marion Eubank and Floyd Hulse with Mrs. Carrie Hays at the piano sang “Jesus Savior Pilot Me,” “Far Out On The Desolate Billow,” and “Eastern Gate.”
Pall bearers were E. C. Battles, Charley Tramel, Charley McIntire, George Whitehead, Fred Welsh and William Byal.
The body was laid to rest in the Union Chapel Cemetery.
