Mrs. Nellie Lowry Pioneer Resident, Died Aug. 12th
Funeral services Held At Ira Union Chapel Friday, August 15th
Mrs. P. B. Lowry, 79, passed away August 12th following a short illness from a stroke.
Mrs. Nellie Lowry, daughter of Gibson and Letitia West, was born on May 26th 1869 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At the age of 9 years, she came to Iowa with her parents and settled near Baxter and has spent the rest of her life in Jasper County.
On Jan. 31, 1892, she was united in marriage to Peter B. Lowry. To this union two sons and four daughters were born.
Since the passing of her husband on June 7, 1946, she has made her home in Newton with a granddaughter. In the early part of June she went to South Dakota to spend the summer with her daughter Grace. She had been in her usual health until the morning of Aug. 9th, when she was taken with a stroke while in her sleep.
Although all that kind hands could do, she quietly slipped away in the early morning hours of Aug. 12th at the age of 79 years, 2 months, 16 days.
When a young girl, Mrs. Lowry accepted Christ as her Saviour and always remained true to her faith. She was one of the pioneer Mothers of the country. While her home and family were her chief interest and concern she was never too busy to be a good neighbor and her services were eagerly sought in time of sickness, trouble and sorrow in the community.
She is survived by her sons Wilbur of Mingo, Russell of Los Angeles, Calif., three daughters, Mrs. Grace Cross of Howard, So. Dak., Mrs. Elva Peterson of Newton, Jessie Lowry of Minneapolis, Minn. A daughter, Marian, died in infancy; 20 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a step-brother William West of Baxter and many other relatives and friends also survive. A brother Charles and infant sister preceded her in death.
Funeral services were conducted at the Union Chapel on Friday afternoon, Aug. 15th with Rev. Henry Esch of Collins officiating.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Howard Southern, Mrs. Lou Neal, Otho Hulse and Loren Murphy with Mrs. L. L. Pickett accompanist.
The flowers were arranged by Mrs. Alta Jones, Mrs. Ruth DeReus, Mrs. Lola Planalp and Mrs. John Boyd.
Pall bearers were Roger Peterson, Zane Peterson, James Lowry, John Petersen, Will Armstrong and Robt. Garvin.
She was laid to rest in the Union Chapel cemetery.
