Keyes, Elias Hughes – 1823-1892

Died – At his residence in Mingo, Iowa, August 7, 1892, Elias Hughes Keyes; aged 68 years, 10 months and 2 days.
Mr. Keyes was born in New Harmony, Indiana, November 2, 1823. When a child he moved with his parents to Marseilles, Illinois, where he grew to manhood. On the 7th of February, 1845, he was united in marriage to Ann D. Hanson. In 1847 he moved with his family to Benton county, Iowa, locating near where the town of Vinton now stands, and was commissioned postmaster and held the first post office in the part of the country. In 1855 he moved to Jasper county where he has since resided. On the 4th of January, 1864, he enlisted as a soldier in Company K, 28th Iowa Infantry, and served to the close of the war.
The funeral services were held in the grove adjoining Mingo, under the auspices of the G.A.R. Post of Colfax. Rev. Cozier, of Colfax, reached the sermon and was assisted by Rev’ds Lampman, of Greencastle; Pickett, of Collins, and Reeves, of Mingo. There was present a very large assemblage, a great many of which followed the remains to their last resting place in Union Chapel cemetery.
