Eliza Ann Tramel was born in Perbal county, Ohio, May 22, 1828, and died at her home in Ira, Iowa, March 7, 1901.
Her parents removed to Kosciusko county, Indiana, while she was quite young. She united with the Baptist church when she was a girl of nineteen, and at the time of her death was a member of the Christian church of Ira. On April 12, 1849 she was married to Salem Jeffries, who died February 2, 1900.
They were among the old settlers of Jasper county, arriving in 1852, about the same time as her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. B. Tramel, three brothers and three sisters and settled in the neighborhood of the land upon which Union Chapel, two miles northwest of Ira, now stands. Other pioneers of the neighborhood were Reuben Wilson, Samuel Weston, J. B. Crawford, and C. H. Coughlan.
Mother Jeffries was the mother of ten children, four of whom survive her. These are Martha Jane Henderson, of St. Marys, Idaho; Joseph A. Jeffries, Castleton, North Dakota; Hiram and Carrie L. Jeffries, of Ira, Iowa, and Andrew E. Jeffries, a son of Salem Jeffries by a former marriage, to whom she was a faithful mother for all these years. There are seventeen grandchildren.
Mother Jeffries has suffered uncomplainingly for many years, but her last sickness was the general debility of old age. She was a patient, and kind and loving mother, one of the uncrowned queens of the earthly home. The self-forgetful life of a loving mother is most like the love of the Savior and has its reward in grateful affection, in the works that follow, and in the future glory that awaits them.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. E Griffith, of Wesley M>E. church, Des Moines, former pastor in Colfax, and an acquaintance of the family. There was a full house and a long procession in spite of the storm, indicating the place Mother Jeffries held in the hearts of the people. The funeral discourse emphasized the eternal life brought to light in the Gospel, witnessed to by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, and corroborated by the present experience of salvation in the hearts and lives of believers. Those great facts received, the end of the Christian’s life is a doxology, rather than a dirge. The homecoming and reunion with the loved and lost is a joy from which we would not recall them if we could.
She was laid to rest in the cemetery at Union Chapel where her husband, father and mother, a sister and four children lie in waiting for the resurrection morning.
