Polio Fatal To Colfax Child
Marlin Thompson, 22 months, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neils Thompson, died at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday morning at Blank Memorial hospital in De Moines of bulbar polio.
The little fellow was taken ill with a fever such as normally comes with overeating of green fruit Thursday and was treated for summer flue until Saturday when a local doctor was consulted. Sunday morning the boy entered the Blank hospital and in the afternoon was placed in an iron lung. His condition remained serious with a critical relapse at 6 o’clock Monday night followed by another which began at 11 p.m. prior to his death a few hours later. He was paralyzed from his hips up.
He was the ninth polio victim in Colfax within a few weeks, his death being the first in Colfax and the first in Jasper County this year.
He is survived by his parents, 2 brothers, Melvin 5 and Marvin 3, many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.
Funeral arrangements have been tentatively set for 2 o’clock Friday afternoon at the Bumgardner Chapel pending the arrival of relatives from Florida.
