Mrs. Ed S. Meckley Died At Home Wednesday A.M.
Pioneer Mother; Spent Entire Lifetime In Jasper County
Mrs. Ed. S. Meckley, 83, died Wednesday morning at her home in downtown Colfax, having been in a coma twenty-four hours before her passing. She had gradually failed in health since the death of her husband in December of 1949 and had been noticeably sinking away since Friday.
Susan Curry was born near Newton, Iowa October 5th, 1866. She spent her entire lifetime in the county, being united in marriage to Ed S Meckley on September 16, fifty-seven years ago.
She was a very active member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Methodist church societies as long as health permitted. She was of a family of thirteen children and thus was capable of making life interesting for her own family as well as the grandchildren who made the Meckley home a focal point whenever possible.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Verna) Maggard, Mrs. Howard (Ruth) Williams and Mrs. Joe (Edith) Stayner, all of Colfax, a step-daughter, Mrs. Roy (Cora) Wheeler of Milwaukee, Wisc., 3 sisters, Mrs. Berry Tabor of Prairie City, Mrs. Sadie Durham of Ann Arbor, Mich., Mrs. Will Kinart of Newton and three brothers, Clarence and Earl Curry of Newton and Frank Curry in the state of Washington. A number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband in December 1949, a son, C. E. (Bud) Meckley in July of this year, a daughter in 1930, her parents and a number of sisters and brothers.
Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church on Friday at two p.m. with Rev. Floyd Shepherd and Rev. A. A. Burr officiating. Burial will be in the Rorabaugh cemetery.
