Death Takes Prominent Jasper Co. Man
Colin Campbell Passed Away Suddenly Thursday Morning.
Colin Campbell died suddenly Thursday morning at his home four miles southeast of Colfax. He was late coming to breakfast and members of the family found him dead in his bed when they went to call him.
He had been in failing health since last summer and the recent death of his brother, Willis Campbell, who died just five weeks previously on the same day of the week, weighed heavily upon him. He was, however, about his usual duties on the day of his death. Tuesday of this week he had been at Newton on his way to and from the sale held by C. C. Leeper about four miles southeast of Newton.
He and his brother, Willis Campbell had been life-long partners in farming and stock feeding. He had planned to continue these operations, at least during the coming season.
Colin Campbell was born near Cambridge, Guernsey county, Ohio, on November 21st, 1858 and was at the time of his death of the age of 67 years, four months and four days. The cause of death was apparently heart failure.
He came to Iowa with his mother, Sarah Campbell, in 1867, settling first in Iowa county, his father, John Campbell, having died in 1863 in the service of the Union army. In 1867 they moved to a farm west of Newton and in 1869 to the land which he owned at the time of his death.
His death takes from the community the last of the older generation of the Campbell family. He leaves one brother, George B Campbell, an attorney of Denver, Colo. Four brothers, James, Alex, Thomas and Willis, and one sister, Mrs. Jessie B. Kelly, have died within recent years.
Mr. Campbell was never married. After the death of his mother he made his home with his brother, Willis and his family. He was always active in business and himself made a full hand in the fields until within the past year.
He was very kind hearted, full of sympathy and consideration for all about him. Those who came into contact with him in business life characterized him as the most honorable of men. About thirty years ago he united with the Christian church of Colfax.
His death removes one more of the sturdy pioneers from our community.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. P. Quick from his late home on Saturday, March 27th, and interment made in Rorabaugh cemetery.
