James Fred Schutte, 90, of 4158 E. 20th St. S. died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Timothy Peter, pastor of Prairie City Church of the Brethren, officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in his name, to Reasnor First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Jasper County.

The son of John Fred and Adah Eleanor (Woody) Schutte, he was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Spencer, S.D. He attended rural schools in South Dakota. He has been a resident of Jasper County since 1934. On Jan. 29, 1936, he married Lucille Frances Clausen, in Newton. He farmed all his life and did some carpentry and butchering for others. He attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church and was a member of Buena Vista Grange. He enjoyed farming and sports.

Mr. Schutte is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Norman J. and LaRae Schutte and Dean and Pat Schutte, all of Newton; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Montgomery of Newton; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Grace Schutte of Kellogg; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a great-grandson, grandson-in-law and a sister, Mabel.
