Loren D. Loupee, 86, of Newton died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Don Freeman officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the United Presbyterian Church and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the morning of the service.

The son of Jay and Hannah (Anderson) Loupee, he was born Oct. 3, 1918, in rural Kellogg. He graduated from Kellogg High School in 1935 and graduated from Central College in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was part of the famous 34th (Red Bull) Division. Later, following completion of Officers Candidate School, he was assigned to the Medical Administration Corps. He served eight months on Canton Island in the Pacific and then two years in Oahu.

On Aug. 10, 1945, he married Naomi Achtermann in Aplington. He and his brother Ruskin owned and operated the Daisy Lunch for five years. They also owned and operated Loupee's Shoe Store. In 1964, he left the shoe business and joined the Jasper County Savings Bank (now US Bank). He retired in 1984 as the vice president of marketing and personnel.

Mr. Loupee was chairman of the Retail Merchants Bureau for the first Ridiculous Day; past president of the Newton Chamber of Commerce; past chairman of the United Way fund drive; member of the Newton Kiwanis Club; an elder of the United Presbyterian Church for many years and a deacon for two terms; and a past member of the "Friendship Force."

Survivors include a daughter, Beth Campbell of Newton; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve Loupee and Maria Sera of St. Paul, Minn.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother Ruskin; and two sisters, Audrey and Ardis.
