Frances T. Emery Kono, 90, of Newton died Thursday, June 2, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Howard Vrankin of Newton First Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be held later at Newton Union Cemetery.

Memorials to the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center or Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Avery H. and Ostie Emery, she was born July 8, 1919, in Colfax. She was a resident of Newton since 1920. On April 5, 1930, she married Wendell E. Kono in Newton and was a homemaker. She also did home care for children. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed cooking, sewing and knitting with a knitting group that she started.

Survivors include a son, LeRoy E. Kono of Newton; five daughters, Evelyn (Clifford) Petermeier, Jean (Norman "Shorty") Meyer, Judy (Jeff) Coon and Sally (Terry) Berger, all of Newton, and Wendy (Don) Crady of Overland Park, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beth Ermine of Nora Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Bruce Halter; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Lawrence Emery and Jack and Peggy Emery; and a sister, Ellen Sharp.
