MONROE — Conrad C. Garland, 87, of Monroe died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Silent City Cemetery. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be held today from 2 to 8 p.m. at the church, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be given to the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department or Hospice of Jasper County and online condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The son of George Emmett and Margaret Elizabeth (Flynn) Garland, he was born Sept. 1, 1917, in Jamaica, Iowa. At the age of nine he moved with his family to Monroe, a place he would call home for 78 years. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1937. Shortly after graduation, he went to work at W.P. Barber Lumber Company, where he was employed for 68 years. In 1938, he married Mary June Vaughn in Des Moines. He was a member of the Elks Lodge; Whoo Whoo's, a lumber man's group; and served on the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department for 65 years. He was honored in as the first Citizen of the Year Award given by the Monroe American Legion in 2003. He enjoyed shooting pool, which was a part of the family business in the 1930s.

Survivors include his daughter, Jo Ann Emmack of Monroe, two grandsons and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife and his only brother, Marvin.
