William Eilander, 83, of Newton died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at USA Healthcare -- Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. A. B. Sudbrock of Newton Baptist Temple officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials to Newton Baptist Temple may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Henry and Henrietta (Sloterdyke) Eilander, he was born Oct. 18, 1921, in rural Newton. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Sept. 23, 1942, he married Wilma E. Buwalda in Lancaster, Mo. He was a switchman for Rock Island Railroad for more than 30 years and retired in 1980. He was a member of Newton Baptist Temple.

Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Richard Schmidt of Marshalltown, Alice and David Whitlach of Spencer, Donna and Terry Mann of Eldora, and Nancy McConnell and Rosemary and John Long, all of Newton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Darlene Eilander, Larry and Betty Eilander, all of Newton, and Billy Eilander of Grinnell; a sister, Annie Eilander Thompson (who died the following day); 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Fred Blake; two sisters-in-law, Sonja Johnson and Marjorie Holmes; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; an infant son; a daughter, Judith A. Pherigo; four grandchildren; three brothers, Henry Jr., Garrett "Jerry" and Berl Eilander; three sisters, Tietje Eilander, Clarice Blake and an infant sister.
