Darlene J. Rethmeier, 85, of Newton died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Zoar Church in rural Newton with the Rev. Jim Olsen and Chaplain Dale Dorrell of Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines officiating. Burial will be at Zoar Cemetery in rural Newton. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The daughter of Jake and Phoebe (Pyle) Jacobs, she was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Melbourne. She graduated from Rhodes High School in 1936. On Dec. 3, 1936, she married Reno A. Rethmeier in Newton. She was a member of St. John's E & R Church and attended Zoar Church.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Dwight Grimes of Newton; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Kenneth.
