Emma Viola Knapp, 83, of Newton died Friday, Jan. 30, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Community Heights Alliance Church Christian Education Center, 1000 E. 12th St. S., with Rev. Danny Hodges officiating. Visitation and lunch will follow committal services at the church. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials may be made in her name. Pence-Reese Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Knapp was born April 30, 1920 in Albia, the daughter of Jasper and Ella Allison Fortner. She attended Newton Senior High School. She was united in marriage to William Harold Knapp on Oct. 11, 1935, in Clarence, Mo. She was a nurse's aide and homemaker and enjoyed her family, crocheting, bingo, bowling and baking. She was a member of the VFW Post No. 1655 Auxiliary.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmie Lee and Phylliss Knapp of Las Vegas, Nev., and Harold "Wes" and Elaine Knapp of Newton; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marjorie Madison of Marseilles, Ill., and Betty Jane Sandstrom of Portland, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three brothers, John Sherman Fortner, Edward Fortner and Henry Fortner.
