W. Dale Grier, 90, of 710 E. 4 1/2 St. S. died of congestive heart failure Friday, Jan. 2.

Funeral services were held today at 2:30 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. David Wendel of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Guernsey Cemetery in Guernsey.

Memorials will be accepted in his name to the First United Methodist Church or to Jasper County Senior Citizens.

The son of Mark and Sadie (Bowden) Grier, he was born May 12, 1913, in rural Deep River. He graduated from Guernsey High School in 1933. On Sept. 25, 1947, he married Kathryn M. Newton in Victor. He during World War II in the United States Army in Africa and Italy. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton. He farmed near Guernsey and Deep River and was employed for 26 years by the Maytag Company. He retired in 1974 from the machine shop.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Linda Grier of Keller, Texas; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, Paul, LaVerne and Mark Grier; and two sisters, Louise Phelps and Zelma Provin.
