Melrose Man Shoots Self After Argument
Albia – Fred Brewer, 64, shot himself to death on the porch of his home at Melrose Saturday evening.
Dr. W. S. Chester, of Albia, deputy coroner, said Brewer’s wife told him the suicide followed an argument between them. Because of illness, she said, she refused to grant his request to remove his rubbers.
Carrying a shotgun through the room where she was sitting, Mrs. Brewer related her husnand said “Well, I guess I’ll kill myself.”
Dr. Chester said there would be no inquest.
Coming from Minnesota, the Brewers had lived at Melrose about eight years. Their six children live in Minnesota.

Fred Hayes Brewer, son of Emory and Salley Brewer was born in Sherman County, Nebraska and passed away at his home in Melrose, Iowa Saturday evening, Dec. 30 at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 18 days. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Maudie; two sons, Pete and Paul, both of Foley, Minn.; 4 daughters, Mrs. Edith Stay, Mrs. Elva McNamara, both of Foley, Minn., Mrs. Helen Freeman and Mrs. Velma Gage both of Des Moines; 20 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson; 8 brothers, Delbert of Chariton, Iowa; Jess, Newton; Jim, Emory and Robert, all of Des Moines; John and Nick, of Deere Park, Washington; three sisters, Mrs. Elva Kingly of Knoxville, and Mrs. Clara Halterman of Des Moines.
Services were held from the McCoy Funeral home in Chariton, Iowa at 11 o’clock, Jan. 2 with the Rev. G. D. Holman officiating. Gen Hayes sang, “Rock of Ages,” and “Beyond the Sunset.” Interment was made in the Vandalia cemetery.
Pallbearers were Beryl Hull, Tom Comer, Conny McGee, Pat Cronin, Leonard Schakel, Bill Turney.
