Jesse Adam Honnold was born near New Comers Town, Belmont Co., Ohio, Oct. 15, 1840 and died in Monroe, Ia., Oct. 31, 1923, aged 83 years and 16 days. He was one of a family of twelve children, three brothers and one sister survive, namely: T. C. of Chicasha, Oklahoma; Isaac F. of Shelby, Iowa; A. B. of Rockwell City, Iowa; Mrs. Amanda F. Ward of Ord, Nebraska. At the opening of the Civil War he responded to his country’s call and enlisted in Company C, 51st Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry on Aug. 24, 1861, and was honorably discharged from the service on account of disability at Nashville, Tennessee, May 17, 1862. He was a member of Shelledy Post No. 84, G.A.R. Monroe, Iowa.
The major portion of his life in Ohio and Iowa was spent on the farm, coming to Iowa with his parents in Nov. 1862 settling in Marion Co. 3 miles southeast of Monroe, until his retirement in 1894, when he moved to Monroe where he has since resided.
He was married to Delila A. Collins Jan 7, 1869 at Red Rock, Iowa, who survives him. He was the father of 4 children, all living as follows: Nathan F. of Port Chester, N. Y., William J. of Lorimor, Iowa, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Bolte and Mrs. Jessie E. Shaw, of Newton, Ia. Sixteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. In 1919 Mr. and Mrs. Honnold celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, receiving the congratulations of their many friends. He was converted when a boy of 15 in Ohio and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, continuing his relations to the church for 67 years. He held various offices in the church at different times both at Tool’s Chapel and Monroe. He was sticken with paralysis Feb 4, 1922 only partially recovered when he fell early [part of text broken off].
Mr. Honnold was a staunch patriot, a humble Christian, a kind and affectionate husband and father, a true friend. Always cheerful and optimistic, his friends are numbered by all who knew him. Largely attended funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. E. Illgenfritz. The funeral was in charge of the American Legion, also the Civil War veterans and members of the W. R. C. attended in a body. A quartet composed of Miss Thelma Jarnagan, Mesdames M. I. Shaw, O. M. Wilson and J. Lea Taylor, Miss Ruth Cash pianist, sang “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,” “When I Can Read My Title Clear” and “Lead Kindly Light.” Interment was in the Monroe Cemetery. The sympathy of the whole community is extended the bereaved friends. The pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, namely, John and Ira Honnold, Abe Van Iperen, Will, N. P. and Jesse Mullins.

Vriezelaar, Otley; Mr. Williard Mercer, Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Grant, Mr. and Mrs. Fred McLlellan, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Carrier, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Mellott, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Stockton, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Quick, Mrs. Esta Quick, Mr. and Mrs. A. DeReus, Mr. and Mrs. K. VanSteenbergen, Miss Jennie Phillips, Mr. Harry Wade, Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Grant, Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Bolte and Boyd and Geneva Bolte, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Shaw and daughter, Miss Alice, all of Newton.
