Harold K. Miller, age 71 and formerly of the Rhodes/Baxter area, died Saturday January 11 at the Iowa Veteran Home. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15 at the Bethany United Church of Christ in Baxter with Chaplain Jack Mauldin of the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel officiating. Family members greeted friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Military honors were conducted by the Baxter Memorial Post #493 of the American Legion. Cremation followed the funeral service. A memorial fund has been established to the Iowa Veterans Home.
He was born July 12, 1925 in rural Baxter to Eddie and Mary Ann Kline Miller. He was raised and educated in the Ira and Mingo area. He entered the Marines in July of 1943 and served during WWII with an Amphibious Assault unit in the Marshall Islands, Guan, and Okinawa. In December of 1945, he returned to Baxter where he worked for several different companies until he began farming in the Rhodes/Baxter area. He married Ruth Krueger on May 12, 1950 in Newton. Having retired due to ill health in December of 1986, he moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in 1989. He was a member of the Bethany United Church of Christ in Baxter, the Baxter Memorial Post #493 of the American Legion, the Harry C. Harter Post #839 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars the 1st Armored Amphibious Battalion Association of the US Marine Corps, and was a former member of the NFO.
He is survived by his wife Ruth of Marshalltown, four daughters; Vicki L. Carr of Hemet, CA, Pamela K. Gastineau of Chanute, KS, Peggy L. Reins of Skokie, IL, and Kristi A. Casper of Marshalltown; a son, Craig M. Miller of Lynchburg, VA; a sister, Marilyn (Mrs. William) Harsha of Baxter; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Eddie Jr. and Arnold.
Pursel-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
