Berl Eilander, 74, of 418 1st St. N., a resident of Newton since coming from The Netherlands as a child, died Monday evening, Sept. 23, at the Jasper County Care Facility southeast of Newton.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Reese Chapel.
The Rev. Robert Hinshaw, pastor of the Ashton Chapel, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorial contributions to a fund in Mr. Eilander’s name may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors are three sons, Lloyd of Killduff, Sy of Newton, and Donald of Albia; four daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Betty) McDonald, Mrs. Chris (Barbara) Smith, Mrs. Gene (Sherry) Wharff, and Cindy Shaver, all of Newton; 28 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are a brother, Bill Eilander of Newton; and three sisters, Mrs. Burnis (Annie) Thompson of Newton, Mrs. Fred (Clarice) Blake of Des Moines, and Tiedge Eilander of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two infant children, four grandchildren, a sister, and two brothers.
Mr. Eilander was a member of the Newton Baptist Temple and a 25-year member of the United Auto Workers (UAW), Local 997.
Mr. Eilander had been an assembler at the Maytag Co. for 31 years, retiring in 1967.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eilander, he was born Dec. 21, 1910 in Graten, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
He was married to Marie Reynolds Feb. 13, 1932 in Newton.
