September 10, 1929 ~ July 27, 2020 (age 90)RuthAnn Van Elswyk, 90, of Newton died on Monday, July 27, 2020, at Legacy Senior Living in Iowa City. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 6, 2020, at Newton Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the First Presbyterian Church may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
RuthAnn, the daughter of Bill and Irene (Welsh) Fox, was born on September 10, 1929 in Newton. She graduated from Newton in the Class of 1948. After she graduated, RuthAnn worked as a Legal Assistant for the Brierly, McCall, and Girdner Law Office in Newton. On October 6, 1962, RuthAnn was united in marriage with Leo Van Elswyk in Newton. They were blessed with two children, Ann and Peter, who RuthAnn loved staying at home with and raising. During that time she also ran the barn for her and Leo’s apple orchard northwest of Newton. After her children were grown, RuthAnn worked at Hansen Directory for many years until her retirement. RuthAnn and Leo also developed the Promised Land Retreat west of Newton.
Ruth was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon and was part of the Women’s Bible Study. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi, a non-academic business women’s society. For many years, RuthAnn taught the Sunbeams the pre-school aged Sunday school class at the Community Reformed Church. RuthAnn was known for sending greeting cards for people’s birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. She never missed a chance to send a note for a special occasion.
RuthAnn is survived by her children, Ann van Elswijk (Jerry Suder) of Everett, Washington and Peter Adrian Van Elswyk of Iowa City; granddaughter, Winnifred (Zachary) Quincy of Marysville, Washington; and great-granddaughter, Charlotte Quincy. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Leo in 2009.
