Mindy Marie McCarthy
February 15, 1963 - July 20, 2020

Mindy Marie (VanHouweling) McCarthy, wife of Tim, mother of Andrew Jon (Paxton), Kate Marie and Hannah Grace met Jesus on July 20th, 2020. Mindy was the daughter of Myron L. VanHouweling and L. Sue (VanHouweling) McAdams, born on February 15, 1963 at Iowa Lutheran in Des Moines, Iowa. Mindy was raised in Prairie City, Iowa, and resided there at her passing.

Mindy grew up on a small-town farm as part of a large family and developed important life skills along with educational goals. She was in 4H and showed Brown Swiss dairy cattle at many annual shows across the state including the Iowa State Fair; a family tradition. Through-out school, she played basketball, ran track and was the Cardinal Relay Queen in 1981.

Mindy obtained an AA in Paralegal from DMACC and a BA in Accounting from Drake University as part of a working student program and as a non-traditional student. Mindy was a student, an employee, a wife and mother while obtaining her degrees and launching her career path. Mindy worked at various organizations, meeting Tim along the way. They were married in Prairie City on May 5, 1990. Mindy was most recently employed by Wells Fargo where she was a paralegal. She was a member of the Prairie City Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher for years, served board terms with education and missions committees with missions being her love. Mindy was a long-time T.T.T. member, serving various officer roles. She recently served on the PCM School Board. Mindy was a huge supporter of her children's activities and loved attending their events.

Mindy is survived by her mother Sue and step father Dan, her husband Tim, her children Andrew Jon (Paxton), Kate Marie and Hannah Grace and her siblings: Merri (Jeff) DeReus, Mark (Cheryl) VanHouweling, Kyle (Wanda) VanHouweling all of Prairie City and Aaron VanHouweling of Pella; step mother, Susan VanHouweling of Prairie City; Mother-in-Law, Eunice McCarthy of Kellogg, IA; brother-in law, Gary (Gail) McCarthy of Forest City, IA; sister-in-law, Vicki Brown of Kellogg, IA; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; the Drake Supper Group and her church family. She is proceeded in death by her father, Myron VanHouweling; grandparents Carl & Marie VanHouweling and George & Grace Miller; an uncle, Donny Miller; father-in-law, Melvin McCarthy; a nephew, Brice Udelhoven and a niece, Kelly McCarthy.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Newton Church of the Way. Visitation will take place on Monday, July 27, 2020 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the Prairie City United Methodist Church. Due to the COVID - 19 concerns, the family is requesting masks be worn at both events. Memorial may be made to the family and checks made out to Tim McCarthy.
