Mingo – Gerald Edward Herbold, 75, of Mingo died Tuesday, April 24, at Baxter Health Care Center in Baxter.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax with Monsignor John McIlhon and Father Philip Cardenzana officiating. Burial will be at McKeever Cemetery in Colfax. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the church. Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Colfax Immaculate Conception Church, Colfax Emergency Unit or to the Mingo fire Department.
The son of William J. and Mary Maher Herbold, he was born Feb. 19, 1926, in Colfax. He was a graduate of Dowling High School in Des Moines and was in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Mary Celeste Gavin. He was a farmer and was retired president of Herbold Farms, Inc.
Mr. Herbold served as director emeritus of the First Newton National Bank Board of Directors and was a board member of Mingo Trust and Savings Bank. He had been appointed to the Capitol Planning Commission by Governor Brandstad. He enjoyed flying and had achieved a multi-engine pilot’s rating. He flew Iowa political figures throughout the Midwest while they campaigned. He also served as commander of the Mingo Legion Post, director of Sherman Township Country School, director of Mingo School Board, president of Jasper County Cattleman’s Association and president of Jasper County Pork Producers. He was a leader in soil conservation efforts in Jasper County.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Chris and Vikki and Colin, all of Mingo; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Connie Herbold of Des Moines, Colleen Carpenter of Urbandale, Ceil and Rodger Slings of Prairie City, Carol and Alvin Swift of Mingo and Cristen and Dr. James Carlson of Dayton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Joe of Baxter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and a sister-in-law.
