Carter, Clara Bell “Toby” Kern – 1924-2000

Clara B. “Toby” Carter, 76, of Mingo passed away on Wednesday, September 20 at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton of a respiratory ailment. Funeral services were held Monday, September 25 at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home. Burial was at McKeever Cemetery in Colfax.
She was born in Des Moines on July 3, 1924, the daughter of Cecil and Edith Bunce Kern. She graduated from high school in Des Moines and was later married to Lavern “Bud” Carter on June 2, 1946. She had lived in Mingo for 42 years. She was a retired bookkeeper with Williams D-X Service in Colfax.
Mrs. Carter was a member of the Mingo United Methodist Church, Satellite Circle, Mingo Senior Citizens, Mingo American Legion Auxiliary, Newton Women of the Moose and Des Moines Fraternal order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Carter is survived by her daughter, Nancy Chivers of Ankeny; two grandsons; two brothers, Paul and wife Shirley Johnson and Jim Johnson, all of Des Moines; two sisters, Mary and husband Don Osborne of Tucson, Arizona and Juanita Adams of Des Moines. Preceding her in death were her husband in 1985; her parents; a sister and two brothers.
