John "Jack" H. Evans Jr., 79, of Newton died Thursday, March 11, at Park Centre in Newton.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown. Following cremation at Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Marshalltown, private family burial will be held at a later date.
Friends may call Sunday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 3 to 5 p.m.
The son of John and Ruth (VanPelt) Evans, he was born Aug. 27, 1924, in Stuart. He was raised and educated in Marshalltown where he graduated from Marshalltown High School. He served during World War II as a pilot in the United States Air Force.
On Nov. 1, 1944, he married Jean Gould in Amarillo, Texas. Following his honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from the University of Iowa and went on to obtain his teaching credentials from Cal State University. He was head of the business department at Logan High School in Union City, Calif., for 16 years. He moved to Marshalltown in 1980 to become controller at Marshall Office. He retired in 1987.
Mr. Evans was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Promise Keepers. He enjoyed woodworking, computers and playing several musical instruments.
Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Brinda Evans of Marshalltown; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James; and two brothers, Thomas James and Ross.
